Toss and Turn is the sixth episode of the second season of DREAMZzz and the twenty-sixth overall.
Synopsis[]
The dream chasers struggle to stay focused and motivated as they compete in their first R.E.M. trial... wrangling a wild dream creature, rodeo style![1]
Extended: With realms going missing, the dream chasers feel like they should be taking the fight to the Never Witch instead of training for R.E.M. trials, which isn’t going well either. Zoey’s haunted by her most painful memories and Mateo continues to only dream craft Z-Blob-related items. The Night Hunter, now forced to work for the Never Witch, mysteriously keeps tabs on the kids in the waking world.
Plot[]
In the Grim Realm, Susan and Snivel quarrel about how Sneak has abandoned them, which leaves them with extra work before coming up with the idea of going after Zoey again, inspiring the Night Hunter, who disappears to the Waking World.
In the Waking World, the Night Hunter stalks Zoey, who was with the Brooklyn Bureau, who were preparing to head to Castle Nocturnia, but she is still overwhelmed by the forgotten memories the Never Witch made her remember.
Arriving at Castle Nocturnia, the Brooklyn Beareu is surprised to see all divisions from around the world were also present, immediately finding themselves praised. Noting their presence as well as their lack of Night Bureau uniforms, Astrid teases Logan by dream crafting a banana peel monster to attack him before Royce announces how, thanks to the Brooklyn Bureau, the R.E.M. trials would be revived with the first trial, called Toss and Turn, would commence tomorrow.
As the Brooklyn Bureau ponder the first trial, Zoey remembers her time in California, when she and her friend, Miya, were practising the former's mother's song before, after being asked, telling the others about how the Never Witch made her relive the memories she wanted to forget. Zoey then tells them about how Miya is also an aware dreamer, until their encounter with the Night Hunter, during which, he whistled the twisted version of the song. As Zoey wants to change the subject to the trials, they are completely unaware of the Night Hunter eavesdropping on them.
Later that night, at Castle Nocturnia, the Brooklyn Bureau check out some Bed Bugs which they must mount one in order to pass through to the next trial while Albert advises them to use only their creativity before they begin practicing. Unfortunately, Mateo was still in the dumps without Z-Blob and Cooper no longer has his memory of inventing. When Albert inadvertently mentioned to Zoey that she should sing to it, it made her relive the time she was shocked to hear Miya, under the Night Hunter's insistence, altered the lyrics of the song, the original of which the latter calls boring and babyish, even harshly showing sympathy over Zoey's mother's illness and disbands their band. Later on, Zoey confronted the Night Hunter, who tries to offer her a proposition that could even reconcile her and Miya, as well as offering partnership, but Zoey refuses.
While Albert rides the Bed Bug away, Mr. Oz loses his patience and chastizes his students for not concentrating on their practicing, Mateo relying too much on Z-Blob, Izzie lacking focus, Cooper lacking inspiration, Logan lacking creativity, and Zoey still haunted by her memories, not wanting to be beaten by Royce and Astrid before Albert stops him and has them resume practice.
The following morning, as they try to make their own strategies in how to lasso a Bed Bug, Zoey harshly objects before calming down, still annoyed by the memories that give her headaches before heading him, unaware that the Night Hunter was stalking her. Looking at her pocket watch while in her room, Zoey soon remembers the day she moved in, under her aunt Jenny's custody after the former's mother passed on, since her father, whom Jenny refers as a troubled soul, is nowhere to be found. She also meets Jenny's pet cat Pyewacket, who leads her under the bed and finds the pocket watch under a loose floorboard.
Later on at Castle Nocturnia, Phil M.C.s the trial, where 14 agents have to wrangle a Bed Bug and leave the arena. As they prepare themselves, Mateo and Zoey show up late, Mateo showing off a creation he calls X-Blob, leaving Izzie and Zoey unamused. As the trials begin, Cooper's lack of inspiration gets in the way as when he dream crafted some sticky pudding to trap a Bed Bug, it also trapped Izzie, X-Blob was continuously coming apart.
Astrid eventually gets the first position by Dream crafting the Bed Bug to have wheels and reins for it to comply with her wheelchair before leaving the arena. Mateo manages to dream craft blob rope to ensnare a Bed Bug, but abandons it to help Cooper and Logan as three other agents pass the trial. Izzie then inadvertently kills X-Blob by stepping on him and ends up trapped, but Mateo frees her, and she lures a Bed Bug with a carrot to jump on and coerce it out of the arena.
As she tries to grab hold of a Bed Bug, Zoey ends up struck by one. While unconscious, she begins to remember how starting as the Dream Bandit, she infiltrated a meeting between Miya and Night Hunter, whom Zoey thought had manipulated Miya, who opposes both sides before a Grimkeeper grabs the latter and traps her in its body. Managing to regain consciousness, Zoey spots the Bed Bug coming at her, but manages to dodge it and grab onto it as it left the arena, guaranteeing her a spot in the next trial. Logan also goes through by biting on a Bed Bug to make it painfully hop out if the arena. Mateo manages to find the blob ensnared Bed Bug and grabs onto it before it goes through. With the trial over, and Cooper eliminated, Royce announces the winners' next trial will be tomorrow. He then approaches Mateo to congratulate him, but then reprimands him for focusing on his team, claiming they are weak links and that he has potential greatness, which Mateo objects to.
The following morning, Night Hunter approaches Jenny's house before lowering his hood and bandanna to reveal his brown hair and stubbled goatee, and knocks on the door, surprising Zoey and Jenny with the former referring to him as 'dad'.
