The Nightmare King is the former ruler of the Grim Realm and was previously a dream creature named Migo that was dreamcrafted by Lunia. He was imprisoned inside Z-Blob but after he was freed by Mateo, he was turned into a statue as a result of taking Z-Blob's place as the Guardian of the Grim Realm.

“You never forget a nightmare...”
The terrifying ruler of the Grim Realm is desperate to extend his Nightmare empire by corrupting all the Dream Realms and every creature in them. So yeah, basically an all-round bad guy. F minus. 0/10.[4]
History[]
Background[]
Long ago, Migo was created by Lunia. However, because of Lunia's title as a Dream Keeper, Migo was often left behind. Overcome by his fear of abandonment, Migo tried Dream Crafting a friend, but couldn't. So instead, he forced everyone in the Dream World to be his friend, slowing corrupting him. When Lunia found out, she and Migo fought. This eventually led to Migo into becoming the Nightmare King.
Over time, the Nightmare King formed an alliance with the Never Witch. Despite this partnership, he consistently undervalued the immense powers possessed by the Never Witch, powers that surpass even his own.[5] The Nightmare King made the choice to get rid of the Crown of Control, believing it posed a threat to the stability of the Dream World. The Never Witch, on the other hand, sought the crown for her master spell. This led to a confrontation between the two. For a short moment, the Never Witch managed to seize the Crown of Control. When the Nightmare King ordered her to return it, she defiantly refused. He swung his sword at the crown, unleashing a flash of light that blinded the Never Witch.[6] The Nightmare King decided to imprison the Never Witch in the Murky Realm, a place where forgotten dreams were condemned to be erased from memory. This act was intended to ensure that the Never Witch would suffer the same fate as the dreams lost in the Murky Realm, never to be remembered again.[7]
Lunia eventually recruited some Dreamers named Rupert, Hannah, and Beau, who eventually became Dream Chasers to fight against him. However, Hannah brought a Night Terror to the Waking World, forcing another, Mr. Oz, to wake up and save her, leaving Lunia and Beau behind before she creates a new realm to hold the Nightmare King. However, after a few years, Beau sets the Nightmare King free. In compensation, he gives powers to the Dream Chaser and turned him into his loyal second-in-command, giving him the name, Night Hunter. He also turned his former keeper into a Nightmare creature as a concept for his Grimkeepers.

Peak Performance[]
The presence of the Dream Chasers at Pillows Peak caught the attention of the Nightmare King when Logan unintentionally unleashed a powerful shockwave while using Lunia's Hourglass. Understanding that the Dream Chasers were on a mission to seek the Sandman's help in fixing the Hourglass, the Nightmare King urgently commanded the Night Hunter to take immediate action and prevent this from happening. He also issued a stern warning to the Night Hunter, promising that if he were to be imprisoned again, he would ensure that the Night Hunter would suffer the same dire consequences. Moreover, the Nightmare King instructed the Night Hunter to bring along Sneak, Susan, and Snivel.

The Bigger Picture[]
Learning the Dream Chasers are going to Dream Brooklyn and transforms into his Lance disguise. 'Lance' meets up with Logan at the school, but the latter was skeptical, due to the virus, which 'Lance' blew off before telling Logan about the latter's reckless failures and promises to help fix Lunia's hourglass.
Short Sheeped[]
Within the Cyber Realm, the Nightmare King assumed the identity of Lance, awaiting Logan's arrival with Lunia's Hourglass. As soon as Logan appeared, the Nightmare King's demeanor turned hostile, forcefully demanding the hourglass. Sensing danger, Logan instinctively back away, prompting the Nightmare King to shed his disguise and expose his true form. Filled with fear, Logan attempted to flee, but his escape was thwarted by the Nightmare King's summoning of the Grimspawn, who swiftly cornered him. Desperate to use Lunia's Hourglass to Dream Craft, Logan's efforts proved futile. Seizing the opportunity, the Nightmare King snatched the hourglass and abducted Logan.
Returning to the Shadowkeep, the Nightmare King had intentions of utilizing Lunia's Hourglass to locate Castle Nocturnia, desiring to catch a final glimpse of it. However, upon using the hourglass, it failed to function, causing great frustration for the Nightmare King. In his anger, he lashed out at the Night Hunter, blaming him for his false assumptions. The Nightmare King swiftly eliminated a few Grimspawn and ordered the Night Hunter to leave his presence, while Logan was taken to the Fear Works. Later, the Nightmare King had a realization that he could manipulate Logan to join his side, intending to exploit his role as a Dream Chaser and enlist the Sandman's assistance in repairing Lunia's Hourglass.
Logan is escorted to the throne room by the Nightmare King, who informs Logan that the Dream Chasers no longer require his services due to his inability to craft dreams. However, the Nightmare King manipulates Logan by lying that there is something unique about him that could be unlocked if he joins forces. Logan agrees, but is then told that he must face Sneak in a battle or risk Sneak's destruction as per the Nightmare King's customs. As the battle between Logan and Sneak unfolded, the Nightmare King and the rest of the Nightmare Army observed. Unexpectedly, Logan underwent a transformation, turning into a small blue creature, leaving him feeling defeated. Seizing the opportunity, the Nightmare King commanded Sneak to eliminate Logan, which Sneak reluctantly obeyed. However, to everyone's surprise, Logan gained the upper hand and defeated Sneak. In response, the Nightmare King instructed Logan to finish off Sneak, as he believed Sneak was of no further use, threatening to eliminate Logan otherwise. Astonishingly, Logan refused, catching the Nightmare King off guard. Consequently, the Nightmare King ordered the Night Hunter to escort Logan back to the Fear Works.
The Grim Escape[]
Following Logan's rescue by the Dream Chasers and escape from the Grim Realm, the Nightmare King summoned the Night Hunter to the throne room with intentions to punish him for his failure. The Night Hunter attempted to shift blame onto Sneak, accusing him of betrayal for aiding the Dream Chasers. However, the Nightmare King disclosed that Sneak was actually working undercover for him, having placed a yellow eye in Logan's cap to spy on the Dream Chasers. In contrast, the Night Hunter had not contributed anything of value recently. The Night Hunter then unveiled Z-Blob's unique ability to travel between the Dream World and the Waking World, prompting the Nightmare King to devise a plan to conquer the Waking World.
Dreamer's Block[]
Private Eye[]
Songs of the Mist[]
The Nightmare King used his staff to eavesdrop on Logan, attempting to gather information about their next plan of action. However, his spying was abruptly interrupted when Logan's blaring music suddenly started playing.
Subsequently, the Nightmare King swiftly boarded the Nightmare Galleon and set off in pursuit of the Dream Chasers as they embarked on their quest to track down the Sandman. The chase led them to the Murky Realm, where the Dream Chasers crash-landed, much to the Nightmare King's dismay. The Nightmare King commanded the Night Hunter to halt the ship. Perplexed, the Night Hunter inquired about the reason behind this sudden order. The Nightmare King then reminded the Night Hunter of the significance of the Murky Realm and the presence of the Never Witch within it, prompting him to instruct the Night Hunter to apprehend Z-Blob and Mateo on his behalf.

Wake That Dreamer[]
The Nightmare King noticed that Mateo, Zoey, and Beau had arrived in the Grim Realm. Initially, he believed they were there to take his life, but Zoey quickly clarified that their mission was to rescue Z-Blob and protect the Grim Realm from the Never Witch. The Nightmare King dismissed the idea that the Never Witch would pose a threat to the Grim Realm, prompting Mateo and Zoey to connect the dots. They realized that when the Never Witch referred to the Night Hunter's old stomping grounds, she was actually talking about Castle Nocturnia, not the Grim Realm, indicating that her true destination was Castle Nocturnia. As the Nightmare King listened to the heated discussion between Beau and Zoey, he became intrigued by Beau's assertion that Mateo had valid reasons to be wary of him, which left Zoey feeling horrified.
A Tale of Two Teos[]
Mateo took responsibility for his and Zoey's entrapment, realizing that his obsession with rescuing Z-Blob had led them directly being imprisoned alongside the Nightmare King. Zoey, however, remained optimistic, believing that the Never Witch would have to confront the entire Night Bureau and Phil if she wanted to reach Castle Nocturnia. The Nightmare King interrupted their conversation, ridiculing their faith in the castle's security under Phil's supervision and reminding them of his own successful assault on the castle, which he accomplished by bypassing Phil. In response, Zoey threatened to shoot the Nightmare King with her arrow. Mateo tried to use his dreamcraft abilities to break free from the cage but was unsuccessful, while the Nightmare King continued to mock him and encouraged his release. Zoey reiterated her threat to the Nightmare King, and Mateo confided in her that his dependence on Z-Blob for inspiration was hindering his progress. The Nightmare King, meanwhile, derided both of them, along with the Night Hunter, asserting that the Brooklyn Bureau's Dream Crafting skills were being squandered on turning Z-Blob into a mere statue, as he served the same function as any other Realm Guardian.
Acknowledging the Nightmare King's comments, Mateo asked if he was ready to be freed. The Nightmare King suspected a trick but chose to humor Mateo. Using his powers, Mateo restored Z-Blob to his original form, which led to the Nightmare King's liberation. To the Nightmare King's astonishment, he began to glow and grow as Mateo infused him with Z-Blob's Guardian power. He reveled in this transformation, proclaiming it a way to ensure he would always be remembered. However, Mateo revealed that the Nightmare King was actually becoming the new Grim Realm Guardian, meaning he would be bound to protect the Grim Realm and remain dormant unless faced with significant threats. As Mateo spoke, the Nightmare King watched in horror as he began to petrify, ultimately turning to stone.

Dream Chasers and the Riddle-Spokens[]
The Nightmare King summoned the Night Hunter to his throne room, where he reprimanded him for failing to stop the Dream Chasers once again, and demanded an explanation regarding the turn of events. The Night Hunter apologized to the Nightmare King, attributing the failure to sheer luck on the Dream Chasers' part and promising that their good fortune would soon come to an end. The Nightmare King expressed his impatience and contemplated whether to give the Night Hunter another chance or take matters into his own hands, emphasizing his abilities and the insignificance of the Dream Chasers. The Nightmare King reminded his followers that their ultimate goal was to find Lunia before the Dream Chasers and was determined not to waste any more time. A Grimspawn questioned the Nightmare King's previous statement about Lunia's inability to prevent him from corrupting the Dream World. The Nightmare King dismissed everyone and requested some time alone to think.
