Plot[]
Mateo, Izzie, and Zoey narrowly rescue many Dreamlings before bringing them back to their Landing, where Cooper, Logan, Mr. Oz, Albert, and Phil were fixing the window from Castle Nocturnia with Mateo unable to focus without Z-Blob, who is now a prisoner of the Nightmare King, and impatiently wondering how Mr. Oz helped Lunia defeat the Nightmare King the first time. With the window now fixed, they attempt to convince Mateo to conjure its effects, but he refuses, due to not having Lunia's hourglass and the capture of his friend, and not even Izzie's attempts worked. In the Grim Realm, the Nightmare King tortures Z-Blob to create a portal to the Waking World, but to no avail. He then forces the Night Hunter to use Lunia's hourglass on him, but fails as well.
The following morning, the Dream Chasers meet up with Mateo still impatiently demanding Mr. Oz to tell them the Nightmare King's first defeat, until Cooper comes up with an idea. Just then, Julie Putnam shows up and reminds them that they need to work on the maze for the Fall Festival. While working on the maze, struggling with Cooper's plans on it before Julie showed up with Nova and Jayden, whom fooled Julie into them helping the Dream Chasers with the build, the former wanting to get close to them, manages to sweet talk her way into staying at Mateo and Izzie's apartment for a sleepover. Later that night, Mateo and Izzie try to find a way to evade Nova, until Mateo managed to get her to fall asleep by having her watch a presentation of Julie's lecture on the piano.
In the Grim Realm, the Nightmare King sends Sneak to search for the Night Hunter, whom went on break from his efforts to use the hourglass, until he managed to find him before the latter explains that because of using someone's else's hourglass, his longtime fear, corrupt imagination, and lack of humanity, he can not use it without killing himself before discovering Night Terrors had followed Sneak to search for him.
At the Landing, Izzie meets up with the other Dream Chasers and Phil, where Cooper explains his plan to replicate the effects of Lunia's hourglass. Mr. Oz would use his Tesla Blaster as a light source, further powered by Izzie, Cooper can dream craft a mirror to ricochet onto the mirror, and Mateo can dream craft the effects. The plan fails to work when Mateo runs out of Dream Sand while trying to focus and, having enough of Mr. Oz's silence, demands what happened before the latter confessed that he abandoned Lunia and another Dream Chaser to save a Dream Chaser named Hannah who was forced to wake up by a Night Terror. Learning of the Dream Chaser, Mateo gets out the Locator to find him, which leads Mateo to the Grim Realm and discover the Night Hunter and Sneak, the Locator reacting to the former. Discovering he was the Dream Chaser, Mateo intends to fight him, but without any sand, he tries with just his pencil, until Lunia's hourglass reacts with it, turning it into a sword. Learning Mateo has Dream Keeper power, the Night Hunter tries to deceive him into coming to the Nightmare King's castle and rescue Z-Blob alone, however, the other Dream Chasers show up with the Night Hunter mocking Mr. Oz's prior inaction, which gives Sneak the chance to grab Lunia's hourglass and take off as Night Terrors show up. As they get ambushed, Izzie ends up getting grabbed by a Night Terror and forced to return to the Waking World, where she and Nova encounter the Night Terror. Upon learning about it, Mateo, forced away from Logan, returns to the Waking World while the others flee back to the Landing.
In the Garcias' living room, Izzie and Nova try their best not to get scratched by the Night Terror, until Mateo showed up to distract it for Nova to turn on the lights, and the Night Terror flees through a window, leaving Nova demanding answers. The following morning, Zoey scolds Mateo for his intentions to find the Dream Chaser and asks if he did. But, Mateo lies, claiming the Night Hunter scared him off. Mr. Oz then showed up, having notified the Night Bureau of the Night Terror, currently awaiting for nighttime. Mateo then started to continue his doubts of usefulness without Z-Blob until Mr. Oz tells him that the former doesn't make Mateo special, he is special because of Mateo's creation, unintentionally inspiring him to use his newfound Dream Keeper power to help in the story.
In the Grim Realm, Sneak returns Lunia's hourglass to the Nightmare King, whom demands answers from the Night Hunter. He explains that going after Logan, the weakest link, was a mistake, and that they should force Mateo, the strongest link, to make a choice.
