- “Mateo, what did I say about drawing your characters?”
- “You said, 'No drawing on my tablet until homework is done.'”
— José and Mateo, "Awakening" |
Mateo's drawings are the various artworks created by Mateo throughout the show. These include doodles, sketches, comic book pages, and anything else he's illustrated. Many involve Z-Blob.
History[]
Early life[]
When Mateo was young, his mother gave him his very first art set for his birthday, which was when he first drew Z-Blob, inspiring him to become a comic book artist.[1] However, his obsession with drawing Z-Blob was believed to be wasted by others, including Cooper, which was one of the reasons they became estranged.
Season 1: Trials of the Dream Chasers[]
Awakening[]
José discovers Mateo had drawn all over his homework, disappointing him. When his pile of drawings fell out of his locker, Cooper and Logan look at them, the latter mocking them.
Later that night, Mateo draws on his tablet before putting it in his backpack, right next to a broken hourglass that he found, bringing Z-Blob to life.
The following morning, Mr. Oz later showed Mateo a drawing the latter did on his assignment sheet while lecturing him about what he wants to do in the future.
Dream Chasers[]
During his and Izzie's mission to rescue Cooper, some of Mateo's drawings fell out when he was getting out his pencil. Later, using one of the drawings as inspiration, Mateo dream crafts Z-Blob into robot armor.
Chased Dreamers[]
While figuring out a solution to cross the bridge to the Dream Forge, Mateo draws on a napkin of the Dream Chasers climbing a ladder to reach the other side from Mrs. Castillo's food truck before changing his mind and gets rid of it.
The following day, Mateo, fearing he'll lose the ability to dream craft if he fails the Forgemaster's trial, he draws Z-Blob falling while he helplessly watched. Mr. Oz recovers the napkin drawing and showed it to Mateo, who discovers Logan did listen to him.
The Bigger Picture[]
Mateo shows Izzie a comic of their adventures that was done up in a book, amazing her before saying he should show it to Cooper, Logan, or Zoey, only for him to refuse.
Private Eye[]
Mateo discovers Z-Blob reading his latest comic under his bed before taking it from him, instantly deciding to show it to Cooper. He ends up losing it the following morning, where it fell into Mrs. Castillo's grocery bag, which she later reads and gives him her opinion as he came to retrieve it.
Later, Nova spills out all the contents in Mateo's locker, believing he is part of a conspiracy that was leaving students with nightmares, which include his drawings. When Julie Putnam sees them, she believes they're a theme for the upcoming Fall Festival and took them to be recommended, ignoring Mateo's protests.
Songs of the Mist[]
While in the Never Witch's cave, Mateo experiences a memory from when he received his first art set for his birthday.
Night Hunted[]
Mateo tries to hide his drawings when Nova managed to persuade him and Izzie to have a sleepover at their place before she showed up and looked at them.
Enter the Nightmare[]
Mateo draws a drawing of Z-Blob eating pizza while lamenting having to leave him in the Dream World.
Season 2: Night of the Never Witch[]
Sheep Freak[]
Mateo tries to draw an alternative plan to encase the Nightmare King, only to scrap them whenever he is doesn't think it's right.
Sound of Sirens[]
Some of Mateo's drawings were on Principal Elrod's desk.
Trivia[]
- Mateo often draws in shades of black, white and grey, only colouring in things that are green; that most often being Z-Blob.
