Mateo: Hi everyone. Um, I'm Mateo, and I like to draw. I wouldn't normally be doing this but my sister Izzie has challenged me to "share my art"... or something. Anyway, in these videos I will show you how I draw some stuff, and hopefully it will inspire you to do the same. You can draw along if you feel like it, so get a pencil... out, or something. This is... Draw with Mateo!

(Shows images of Bunchu)

Mateo: Today I will teach you to draw Bunchu. Bunchu is actually from an anime series Izzie really loves. She has a lot of merchandise like plushies, books, posters, and even her PJs has Bunchu on them. He's just a small cute rabbit, but when she Dream Crafts him in the Dream World, he's big, and that's what I will draw today.

(The canvas appears onscreen)

Mateo: I usually always start with the head and use very basic shapes to get the proportions right. So an oval for the head, and then some rectangles on top. A little more narrow at the bottom. Then, another oval. This will be the body. And then I'll get going on the legs. Again, just making the shapes with rectangles. We will make them more detailed later. First the front leg, and more ovals for the toes. Three of these on each foot. And then the other front leg. Same thing. Rectangles, and ovals.

(Mateo finishes the front legs)

Mateo: And then the back legs. For that, we will need three rectangular shapes. That's just how a rabbit is built. You can find a picture online if you like. But also, three toes for the back legs.

(Mateo moves onto the second back leg)

Mateo: And again. Notice this one is behind the body. And then I will add some circles for the tail. And those are all the basic shapes for Bunchu. Isn't that cute? He already looks almost soft and fluffy. I'm sure Izzie would love him already. She loves all kinds of animals. Now before we get into details, and make him really, really cute, I will do a bit of erasing. All those shapes were really just to get the proportions right. Erasing like this makes the two shapes become one.

(Mateo continues erasing some of his lines)

Mateo: And that's the shape of the leg. The back leg, the front leg, inside the head, and the tail. Always erasing the shape which is in the back. Now, I will make those toes connect to the legs. It's just a few lines to connect them. And now we have a rabbit's foot. That's good luck I hear.

(Mateo finishes the feet)

Mateo: And now for the details on his cute little, or rather big, face. So, big eyes with ovals, and smaller ones inside the eyes. That will really give some life to the eyes. Those will be highlights like the light is reflecting in those big, wet eyes. Eyes need to look like they shine. I said eyes a lot. The nose is a small upside down triangle. And then the lip comes down into an adorable smile. Some teeth, and just a little more on the smile.

(Mateo adjusts the smile)

Mateo: Bunchu needs to look furry, so here are some small furry eyebrows. And some hair sticking up from his head. And some on the chin. Now it's time for the ears. And those rectangles I did in the beginning was just to get the size and overall placement right. So, I will draw inside them with softer, rounded shapes. Two of those. And a shape inside the ear. That's the ear hole I guess. Erasing the rectangle shapes.

(Mateo erases the rectangles)

Mateo: And a bit of erasing and touching up on the fur.

(Mateo continues erasing and making adjustments)

Mateo: More erasing. Remember to erase the shape that would be behind another shape.

(Mateo hums to himself while erasing)

Mateo: Adding a few lines. Rounding off some shapes. Nice and soft. Same thing over here.

(Mateo touches up the lines)

Mateo: So whenever Izzie Dream Crafts Bunchu, he has these weird armor thingies on his paws. I don't know what they do, but I think Izzie thinks it makes him look both cool and cute. Again, using rectangles. A bit of erasing on the legs, because they are behind the new shape.

(Mateo adjusts the legs for the armor)

Mateo: Now, I'm gonna color in the nose. And the eyes. That really brings them out and they look even more shiny and cute. Izzie's gonna love that. Inside the mouth for some depth, that also makes the teeth easier to see. Filling in some areas. Just do it fun and loose. That works well for Bunchu because he's furry, so it doesn't need to be that even.

(Mateo continues coloring in more areas)

Mateo: I love doing this.

(Mateo continues to color)

Mateo: I'll add a bit of shadow on the side of these things, and put in the lines farther apart than I did on the toes. Then the shadows won't feel so dark. More fur, just drawing wavy lines on top of my original shapes.

(Mateo adjusts the fur)

Mateo: Now Bunchu is almost done. I could keep adding more detail. Some freckles. I think he has those because Izzie also has freckles.

(Mateo touches up some lines)

Mateo: A bit of shadow below his feet so it doesn't look like he's floating. Okay, let's stop here. I can keep adding details, but sometimes you have to say enough is enough. And I'm pretty sure Izzie will like it. I may print it out for her.

(The screen switches to Mateo)

Mateo: Well, I hope you like that. Or at least felt just a little inspired to try it out yourself. Izzie has told me to say this. (Clears throat) Your art doesn't need to be perfect. Just as long as you have fun doing it, and you like it yourself. Join me in another video for another drawing. (Calls offscreen) There, Izzie. I did it. Are you happy now?
