Awakening is the first episode of the first season of DREAMZzz.
This episode is dedicated to Nathan Shepherd who wrote this episode and died before the series aired.
Synopsis[]
When Mateo’s comic creation Z-Blob, follows him from a dream back to Brooklyn, Mateo and his sister realize the dream world is real and in danger.[1]
Netflix: Brother and sister Mateo and Izzie are transported from the real world to a dimension of dreams, where an evil king is trying to seize control.
Extended: After sharing an incredible dream, Mateo and his sister, Izzie, realize the Dream World is real when Mateo's comic book hero, Z-Blob, comes alive and follows them back to Brooklyn. But when Mateo's ex-best friend, Cooper, is captured in the Dream World by evil nightmare creatures and can't wake up, Mateo and Izzie discover there are Waking World consequences to what happens in their dreams.[2]
Plot[]
The episode starts with a masked man fighting the Grimspawns. He is then struck by an arrow by the Night Hunter before using an hourglass to escape. He manages to escape to the Waking World, but the effect of the arrow slowly causes him to turn into a Night Terror, knocking over a trash can, until he reaches a streetlight and disintegrates. The occurrence causes him to drop the hourglass he used to escape, which breaks, causing a shockwave and setting off car alarms. Awoken by the sound and feeling the shockwave, Mateo wakes his sister, Izzie, up before they look out their window to find out what is happening. As they do so, they notice their opposing neighbor and Mateo's former friend, Cooper, was doing the same. When Mateo messages him about it, he was met with Cooper simply closing his window, disappointing him before they go back to sleep. The following morning, Mateo is woken up by his phone playing K-Pop music that Izzie had put on before getting ready for school. As they stop at Mrs. Castillo's food truck van to buy breakfast, Mateo sees the knocked over trash and discovers the broken hourglass, which he takes. At school, Mateo's pile of books fall out of his locker, which are discovered by Cooper and his friend, Logan, and start to make fun of them as well as Mateo not having anyone alongside him for the upcoming Sheep Week due to his obsession of drawing comics about a creature called Z-Blob before Mr. Oz shows up and tells them to get to class.
Later that night, Mateo and Izzie argue over how the former will die alone and sad in a cave if he doesn't get out more and try new things before going to bed with Mateo putting his tablet in his backpack with the hourglass still in it. When he wakes up, Mateo finds himself in a floating field with many doors, floating trees, and his and Izzie's bedroom furniture in the center. As he was amazed, Izzie came over next to him to express her amazement as well before Mateo discovers his backpack moving. Izzie opens it and becomes surprised to see Z-Blob has became real, as is Mateo, who wished he drew him a mouth so he could find out how he became real. Seeing the doors move, one with some mushrooms on the side opens up, revealing a portal before Izzie heads through it, followed by Z-Blob. Retorting their previous topic, Mateo also heads through it, and then all end up in a forest. Izzie soon tries to fly before being given one by some fairies and starts to act like a deer while Mateo took a quiet spot to draw, until a dark cloud appears and they try to return to the door, but it fades away, A wave soon passes by, changing the blue sky to orange, the trees becoming dark, leafless and veins glowing all over, and the grass being removed. The Grimspawns soon arrive and start to chase them, but they manage to evade them, only to come across a creature with a cage for a torso that prepares to step on Z-Blob, but Mateo manages to grab him, one of his pencils mysteriously glowing and getting larger, which the creature steps on, and the three of them take off. As they ponder on how the pencil grew, they find themselves ambushed by more Grimspawn before the creature catches up to them, only for them to hear K-Pop music and disappear before it could grab them. As the Grimspawn start throwing blame games on each other, the Night Hunter, also blamed by the Grimspawn, states they'll come back, as Cooper is inside the creature's cage.
Mateo and Izzie soon woke up to the sound of K-Pop from the former's phone and declare their opposing opinions on their shared dream before Izzie takes off to the bathroom. At school, as Mr. Oz reads out the student names, with Cooper mysteriously absent, everyone hears something rumbling, which Mateo finds it's coming from his backpack while everyone else thinks it's his stomach and make fun of him. When he opens his backpack, Mateo discovers, to his shock, Z-Blob was inside it. Quickly excusing himself, Mateo grabs Izzie before heading to the library, where he shows her Z-Blob, making her squeal in delight, but Mateo shushes her so no one else finds out. At lunch, they try to figure what to feed Z-Blob before giving him random foods, which he instantly swallows before Mr. Oz approaches them, to check up on him and asks for his homework, which he neglected to hand in before he took off, which he gives him, only to find Z-Blob's slime all over, which Mateo and Izzie claim it's just snot. After school, Mr. Oz has Mateo stay behind to talk about his talents, while Z-Blob takes the former's Jell-o before hiding again, before asking him to deliver Cooper's schoolwork since he didn't show up. When he reached Cooper's apartment, Mateo finds his father comforting Cooper's mother, who is concerned for her son. Intercepting Izzie, Mateo shows her the situation before they sneak in and enter Cooper's bedroom, where he was in bed, seemingly sleeping, but unresponsive. As Logan entered with a suggestion of getting him some soup, he and Mateo start to argue about his friendship with him before Izzie tells them about Cooper's skin tone changing, Mateo tells her they have to return to the Dream World to rescue Cooper.
